Looking to graduate from electric to upright bass? I'm a seasoned jazz bassist in SF and looking for new students.
I've been playing upright bass for 30 years and my main focus is jazz. I run several jazz jams around town and I play close to 300 performances a year. I've been teaching for several years and I have extra upright basses for students to rent if they don't have an upright of their own yet.
My lessons focus on learning the fundamentals of playing the bass as well as the music theory knowledge required to be a solid bass player. I'll help get you to the point you can walk lines over changes without stressing about it. I tailor my lessons based on your level of playing and where you want to go with it.
My goal is to help you reach the level of playing you're trying to get to and get you comfortable playing in group settings in various styles. Since I run several jazz jams a week, and sometimes play in a weekly bluegrass jam, I can get you playing with a group once you're comfortable. My jazz jams are an easy going environment that won't be too intimidating as long as you're serious about the music. If you're a quick study I'm sure you'll be a gigging bass player within a month or two!
I'm also open to working with instruments other than bass if you're looking for general jazz and music theory lessons. I'm open to singers as well. Keep in mind that our lessons will focus on jazz and playing tunes so if you're looking for fine grained technique on your instrument that isn't my bag (unless you're a bassist).
I'm available during the weekdays and weekends. I gig 3 to 5 nights a week but I'm available some evenings. I have a space for lessons or happy to come to you.
Lessons are $45 an hour.
