Built in Madrid, Spain by Manuel Contreras, Sr., this is his flagship model, the Doble Tapa. It has a Brazilian rosewood back that is doubled on the inside with a cedar “tapa” (plate, or “cover”, literally, from the Spanish). The soundboard is spruce. The marriage of woods— cedar over rosewood under spruce—produces a distinctive voice. The brightness and clarity of tone that you get from the very best spruce-top guitars is, in this case, tempered with the warmth of cedar. It has great depth and power, a guitar that must be played to be fully appreciated.
Overall, the guitar is in great shape. In 2020, Ben Lomond luthier, Eric Reid, lowered the string height on the guitar with the installation of a new fretboard, nut, and saddle. He also installed new frets. As well, he reinforced a cleated crack adjacent to the mid-seam on the lower bout of the soundboard. The finished result of his work is absolutely stellar.
The string height now sits at approximately 3.75mm on the sixth string and just under 3mm on the first string (twelfth fret). There is excellent break angle and plenty of saddle if someone should want to lower it even further. Additionally, it has a standard 650mm scale and neck width at the nut of 52mm. All in all, it is a very comfortable guitar to play.
There are a few high-E string burns in the lacquered finish below the bridge, complements of the previous owner. Other than these items and some very minor nicks, scratches and playing wear that you would expect to find in an instrument of this age, the guitar is in excellent condition.
A Manuel Contreras II case is included. Serious inquiries are welcomed.
