Solanum quitoense, commonly known as naranjilla or lulo, is a tropical perennial plant native to the Andes region of South America. It's a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and is cultivated for its unique, orange-colored fruit.
The naranjilla produces golf-ball sized fruits with a thick, orange peel and a green to yellowish, acidic pulp. The fruit is known for its distinct pineapple-lemon flavor, making it popular for juices, drinks, and desserts. It's a shrubby plant, typically reaching 2-3 meters in height, with stems that become woody over time. It originates from the subtropical understories of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This a subtropical plant USDA hardiness zone 10-12, not frost tolerant at all.
