Milo Baughman designed a lot of chairs for Thayer Coggin over the 50 years they spent working together, but these are among Baughman's most playful creations. Lightweight, yet sturdy, and super comfortable, the chairs are constructed with a version of Baughman's hallmark metal base paired with a plush seat and a tall, supportive back that does double duty as rear legs.
Featuring their original upholstery in primary hues of red and blue atop a yellow "wire" base, these eye-catching chairs would look at home among furnishings by the Memphis Group or around the table in PeeWee's Playhouse. They are as unmistakably '80s as Kate Bush and US presidents with dementia.
Original manufacturing and shipping tags reveal that the chairs were purchased by the bygone, Bay Area-born Emporium-Capwell department store chain and shipped to the Capwell flagship store in downtown Oakland in 1984. 42 years later, they are as comfortable, sturdy and elegant as when they were new with just a few signs of wear to the fabric and base.
