This is a French potty chair is called a chaise percée, which translates to "pierced chair" or bourdaloues and chamber pots, . It was purchased from Pierre Deux - the French store that sold French Provincial home furnishings imported from France.
I like to call it my library chair - a play on the 1950s when people used to say I am going to the library when using the bathroom. So it has been next to my library. Some French potty chairs came with flat tops over the lid. This chair was made without one. A cushion can cover the seat. However that is part of the humor of owning the chair. It is a true conversation piece.
It is made of walnut and has a nice patina. I don't know the age. It is probably late 1800 - early 1900. Modern plumbing took a while to spread to rural France.
The chair is pretty standard size. 17 inch from seat to floor with width from 16 - 19 inches. The height is 48 inches.
The condition of it is the same as when acquired in 1992 as it has not been often used. Any imperfections were there when purchased. I should have wiped the dust off the back. There are not blemishes as might appear in the photo.
I am changing my decor, hence selling. Since French furniture is not as popular I am also selling it for less than paid in 1992.
