Design Plus Gallery presents a Steel + Leather Strap Rocking Chair from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the 1990s. Visually and conceptually, the chair draws clear influence from the electric chair, a device historically associated with capital punishment, recasting it into the realm of contemporary craft and design. By combining the gentle, calming mechanics of a rocking chair with the form and function of an instrument of control and fear, the artist creates a powerful conversation about power, submission, and the thin line between comfort and coercion. The use of soft black leather against harsh steel and the contrast between nurturing movement and restrictive elements challenge viewers with a queasy duality, characteristic of provocative late 20thcentury art. The metal armrests feature two adjustable black leather straps. Meant to secure the sitters arms upon the chair, these straps immediately evoke the look and function of restraints. On the front, the leg area of the chair features two concave placements, shaping the metal to cradle the sitters legs and suggesting a predetermined positioning.
