The French word églomisé means "glass gilded," decorating glass by painting on the back or reverse side, sometimes gilding with gold or metal leaf. It is an intricate decorative art where gold or metal leaf is applied to the back of glass, then engraved or painted in reverse to create designs, resulting in a mirror-like finish with depth and luster, used for furniture, mirrors, and art. It's an ancient method named after 18th-century French decorator Jean-Baptiste Glomy, involving applying metal leaf with a gelatin adhesive, then etching or painting through it, creating a challenging, layered effect.
