This is a very clean, well-preserved low mileage set of classic 700 clincher road wheels in excellent - close to new old stock - condition. Buttery-smooth bearings, rims are perfectly true, and the braking surfaces show barely any wear.
These wheels were originally sold in 1997 – 2004 and were known for their reliability, responsiveness, and surprisingly light weight for a durable build. They hold up well for daily riding, long mixed-condition miles. A great replacement set for your Shimano 8/9-speed road bike, especially if you are looking for a matching period-correct upgrade for bikes built with Shimano 5500 or 6500 drivetrains.
The hubs are Shimano Ultegra (6500 series) with the standard 130mm rear / 100mm front spacing and classic loose-ball angular contact bearings - one of the best designs from that era for longevity and serviceability. They’re fully rebuildable and easy to maintain with just new bearings or cones if ever needed. Freehub body works with Shimano/SRAM 8, 9, or 10-speed cassettes. Also worth noting: the freehub on these spins quietly, unlike some of the louder options out there.
Wheels are laced with stainless spokes to Mavic CXP23 clincher rims. The CXP23 rim has a higher, slightly more aero profile than the Open Pro. made with Mavic’s proprietary Maxtal alloy and feature SUP - arc welded joints.
If you’re after a reliable, serviceable “silver on silver” wheelset for your vintage Shimano 9speed build—this one would work perfect. (Bianchi , Lemond, Trek, Specialized, and many other bike brands used them.)
