A time capsule from the golden era of mountain biking — a Mango Yellow 1998 Specialized Stumpjumper M2 FS Comp, in excellent all-original condition. Just M2 Frame + SID fork sell on eBay for what I am asking for the whole bike. Handmade in the USA from Specialized’s M2 metal matrix composite aluminum alloy, this frame was cutting-edge in its day and remains a sought-after classic among collectors. The M2 designation stands for "Metal Matrix" composite, which is a blend of 6061 aluminum alloy infused with a ceramic material—specifically, microscopic particles of aluminum oxide.
This is the model with the original RockShox SID XC fork, which still has a smooth, controlled bounce. The bike looks like it’s been stored indoors since new — sparingly ridden, with every detail exceptionally clean. Back in 1998, this was a $1,900 high-performance machine, and it still rides like one today.
It’s rolling on its original 26” Mavic SUP 217 anodized clincher rims, laced with DT stainless spokes to Specialized hubs. Tires are Continental Gatorskin Trail Contact, showing minimal wear.
Shimano XT/XTR 3x9-speed drivetrain shifts flawlessly — crisp shifting XT RapidFire triggers, 42/32/22t Specialized Strongarm II crank, and 11–30t XT cassette. The Avid-4 V-brakes still wear their original metal-cased pads and stop with authority.
Other highlights: Specialized flat bars, Specialized cold-forged aluminum stem, clean original S-Works grips, WTB Volt saddle, and Ritchey seatpost.
For a collector, it’s rare to find a nice clean perfectly functioning Stumpjumper M2 FS Comp In in Mango Yellow in original-spec condition. For a rider, it’s a lightweight, responsive, beautifully built US-made mountain bike, that’s ready for both trails and memory lane.
