Live in a large, beautiful, sunlit home, blocks from Pacific Ave, with a beautiful garden and a wonderful dog. We're in a great location for walking and biking. Easy access to downtown, UCSC, Mission, Highway 1 and 17.
- fully furnished living spaces and kitchen
- dishwasher, washer and dryer in house
- wood floors, high ceilings, lots of windows
- big yard, back deck, picnic table, lots of plants and trees and garden space.
One of the house's four bedrooms is available. It is a private room with a shared bathroom. The room will be available January 1, but I have some flexibility if you want to move in earlier (in December).
My preference is to find someone for a year long lease, but I would happily consider a shorter lease, depending on the circumstances. The room is not available month-to-month. I can provide some furnishings if you need, or the room can be rented empty.
Your housemates will be:
- my dog! friendly, well behaved, 60 pounds. It's important to me that you and she get along. You won't be responsible for her care, but I want you to enjoy each other's company.
- me, a mid-thirties woman, owner of the house. I'm a horse trainer and riding instructor, but I used to work in tech. I enjoy running, hiking, surfing, yoga, cooking, and reading in my spare time. Usually pretty quiet at home, and like things neat and tidy.
- a late twenties woman, grad student in science, busily pursuing PhD. Works from home a fair amount. Active gardener, and a regular at the climbing gym doing both climbing and yoga.
- mid-thirties man, professional chef at a bustling downtown restaurant. Skateboards, cooks a lot, loves music and houseplants and animals, very active outside the home.
Sorry, no other pets allowed.
A great couple, similar age range to the rest of us, lives in a neighboring unit in the backyard. We share utilities and outdoor space with them, but it's otherwise separate.
Other details:
I expect the common areas of the house to be kept clean and tidy-- i.e. dishes and cookware cleaned and put away after meals, we keep our personal items in our rooms so that common areas are ready and available for anyone to use. We have defined individual cupboard space and fridge shelves in the kitchen, but share cleaning products and staples like olive oil and spices. I care a lot about the atmosphere at home, and enjoy living with others who do similarly. I appreciate direct communication, and people who treat others with consideration, and have awareness and good-humor around their own behaviors, habits, and needs. Other house rules are No smoking and Shoes off inside.
Other expectations are that we're all courteous about guests and noise, and aware of how our activities affect others. I appreciate warmth and kindness, and look to have an environment where we all extend that consideration to one another. Sharing space with three-four other people is a lot of fun when this is present on all sides. I appreciate and give room for independence with housemates, but it's also important to me that anyone living here wants to have a sense of community and shared wellbeing with housemates. Normally we're all quiet and mellow around the house, but we like having occasional dinners and small parties with everyone who lives here and close friends. Day to day, it's nice to cook and share meals together casually when the opportunity arises, or just say a quick hey as we bump into each other. Of course sometimes we all need space and quiet time, and that's cool too. I've made friends I'll keep for life through meeting as housemates, and I'd love to have that experience again.
Utilities (water, electricity, gas, garbage, internet, house cleaning) are not included in rent and run about $150-$200 per person per month, higher in winter. Parking is on the street, and requires a downtown permit. We're all limited to one car, each. I'll be asking for a security deposit of $2,000 at lease signing, plus the first month's rent at move in. I will ask for proof of employment/income/finances, and references. A formal rental application, credit and background checks will be required, but I'm happy to start with a less formal conversation.
