A Direct Support Professional provides tailored support to individuals on the autism spectrum to help them improve their quality of life, manage daily tasks, and enhance their social, communication, and behavioral skills. The role may vary depending on the individual’s needs and the setting (e.g., home, school, community), but generally focuses on providing hands-on, individualized support.
Job Description: Direct Support Professional/Companion
Job Summary:
Support an adult guy on the Spectrum with daily living skills, communication, behavior management and socialization into various environments. To help him achieve his personal goals, develop independence, and integrate successfully into various environments. Requires an empathetic and patient individual that’s fun loving and likes to communicate.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Behavioral Support:
*Implement behavior intervention plans to address challenging behaviors.
*Monitor and assess progress in reducing unwanted behaviors and increasing desired behaviors.
*Utilize evidence-based strategies (e.g., Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA techniques) to encourage positive behavior changes.
2. Daily Living Assistance:
*Assist with developing essential life skills such as cooking.
*Help with time management, organizational skills, and task sequencing to promote greater independence.
*Offer physical support as needed to ensure safety. On stairs without a handrail he needs a hand or shoulder to hold on to.
3. Communication Support:
*Provide support when he orders food/drink at coffee shops/restaurants.
*Provide support in developing verbal communication skills.
*Help facilitate conversations, social exchanges, and other interactions with peers, family members, and the community.
4. Social Skills Development:
*Implement programs that teach social skills, including understanding body language, making eye contact, initiating conversations, and appropriate social cues.
*Encourage participation in social and recreational activities.
*Assist in navigating social situations both within the family and in community settings (e.g., parks, stores).
5. Personalized Program Development:
*Develop a support plan tailored to his unique needs and strengths.
*Collaborate with family members and other specialists to ensure the plan is well-rounded and comprehensive.
*Continuously update the support plan based on progress or any changes in his needs.
6. Family Support and Education:
*Provide guidance and training to family members on best practices for supporting the individual with autism.
*Offer emotional support and resources to help families better understand autism and manage challenges at home.
*Foster positive relationships with family members, other DSS/Companions, and other professionals involved in his care.
7. Community Integration:
*Assist him in participating in community activities, such as outings or volunteer work.
*Ensure that community environments are inclusive and that he can interact successfully in various settings.
*Provide transportation assistance to help the him attend social or recreational activities.
8. Progress Monitoring and Documentation:
*Maintain accurate and detailed records of interventions, progress, setbacks, and behavioral reports.
*Regularly assess the effectiveness of strategies and adjust plans as needed.
*Provide periodic reports to the family.
Qualifications:
*Education:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, special education, philosophy or a related field (preferred).
Certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or experience with behavioral therapies is a plus.
*Experience:
Prior experience working with individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, or developmental disabilities is a plus.
Experience with behavior management, social skills training, or life skills development.
Skills:
*Knowledge of autism spectrum disorder, its challenges, and effective intervention strategies.
*Strong communication skills to work with individuals with autism, families, and other professionals.
*Patience, empathy, and understanding of the unique needs of individuals with autism.
*Ability to be flexible and adapt interventions based on individual needs.

*Salary: Range $24+DOE
