c. 1890 Dutch colonial-era tobacco plantation chair from Java, Indonesia. A rare and unusual, hand-carved polychrome wooden chair in good condition.
This diminutive, all-original chair was used by Javanese tobacco harvesters. It features an inclined back and retains its original platform, with an opening for a rectangular post that held a device workers used to twist and roll the tobacco leaves in preparation for the market. The chair is predominantly wood grain with the back of the seat painted in green.
The chair is smaller than a "normal" chair, measuring 20.75 inches tall, 9.0 inches wide, and 12.0 inches deep. The platform is 20.0 inches long.
The chair is solid and complete (except for the removable post described above.) Some small nails have been added to the underside of the chair to reinforce it. There is a metal strap on the front of the platform, which was probably added later.
Few of these chairs have survived. A gentleman who lived in Java for many years told me this is the first tobacco plantation chair he has seen outside of Java.
