The price for one DAS unit is $380. The price for both DAS units is $720. These prices are firm and non-negotiable. Please don't ask for a discount or make an offer.
For sale is an external enclosure that holds up to eight (8) hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid state drives (SSDs). This type of device is usually called a Direct Attached Storage (DAS) unit. This is a Sans Digital brand, from their TowerRAID series, model number TR8X12G.
I actually have two (2) of these, which are identical. You can purchase one or both. The purchase does NOT include any HDDs, SSDs, HBA cards, or server computers. You are only purchasing the DAS towers and connector cables.
How does this DAS unit work? You first install up to eight (8) HDDs or SSD into individual removable metal drive trays which get inserted into the DAS unit's front-panel metal rails. You can utilize either SAS or SATA drives, which can be either 3.5" or 2.5" in size.
You then plug this device into a standard electrical outlet. And then you connect this device (and the drives inside) to your computer using two sets of standard mini-SAS cables. More specifically, it connects using two SFF-8644 ports, which are located on the back panel. Included in the purchase are two (2) sets of SFF-8644 to SFF-8644 cables. Each cable can access up to four (4) drives. The other end of the SFF-8644 cable connects to your computer server or HBA card. You access and control the drives using your server or HBA card.
Please note that this device does not have any internal processor to create RAID arrays. Drive RAID capabilities are dependent on your server or HBA card.
There is no limit to the capacity of the HDDs to be installed and this theoretically could hold up to 192TB of storage (using eight 24TB drives).
Both of these devices were used in a non-RAID personal server that housed my large collection of movies for about 2 years. I am moving unto another system. Given the limited usage, both DAS units are in excellent functional and cosmetic condition. There is nothing wrong with either of them. You'll get the DAS tower, eight drives cages, 32 screws, two sets of connector cables, and an AC cable. If you purchase both towers, you'll get two sets of these. The original cardboard box and product manual are not available.
