Salthill large format enlargers were designed and made by Joseph Saltzer during mid 1990's in New York for short period of time. Their ingenious design and meticulous execution are meant to please the most discerning darkroom users. It has been more than 20 years since their production stopped in 1997, due to the high cost of their elaborate engineering and digital revolution, so they are quite rare on the market and very collectible.
The core of a Salthill 4x5 enlarger is a 2” thick, 3 oz by weight, light-emitting panel of woven optical fibers, replacing condenser-, diffusion-, and coldlight-illumination housings found on traditional enlargers. This considerably reduces the weight of the enlarger head and the bulk of the supporting column, resulting a sleek and elegant product.
The fiber optic panel offers superbly even illumination-no more than 5% deviance over its entire surface area. The light source is in the enlarger's control console, rather than above the negative in the enlarger head, as is typically the case. The fiber optic cable, which carries illumination from the console to the head, transmits no heat. Also, the cooling fan, a possible source of minute vibrations, is built into the console as well. The contrast control is achieved by dichroic filter dials on the light console in a semi-close loop, with the sensor measuring the actual output. The console also contains a neutral density diaphragm that can be employed to reduce the effective output of the light source, permitting the photographer to increase print exposure times while maintaining the optimal lens aperture.
This enlarger comes with a customized baseboard of 20" x 24" of beautiful tropical hardwood Chechen, with multiple coats of line seed oil, then hand polished to a lustrous finish. The whole set-up weighs only 53 lbs without counting its separate light console. A pair of original wall-mounting brackets also come with the enlarger.
