We’re a small, fast-growing AI startup with core team in the Bay Area and a couple team members in two other U.S. states, looking for a part-time HR / Payroll / Compliance professional to help us stay clean, compliant, and well-run as we scale.
This is a remote / virtual role with flexible hours. Most of our HR and payroll workflows are already set up and run through Gusto.
Work varies from 8-16 hours/month.
What you’ll do
- Own and manage payroll via Gusto (employees + contractors, multi-state)
- Support HR operations: onboarding/offboarding, offer letters, documentation
- Ensure multi-state payroll and basic employment compliance
- Help with benefits administration (primarily through Gusto)
- Maintain HR records and improve lightweight people-ops processes
Act as a go-to person for HR, payroll, and compliance questions
What we’re looking for
- Hands-on experience with Gusto (strongly preferred)
- Startup experience is a must (early-stage, small teams)
- Background in HR, payroll, and compliance
Experience with accounting & finance is a high plus - especially payroll accounting, contractor payments, light bookkeeping, or working closely with a bookkeeper/accountant in a startup
Comfortable working independently and asynchronously
Detail-oriented, practical, and founder-friendly
Nice to have
- Experience with CA and other state labor/payroll rules
- Experience supporting teams of ~10–30 people
- Prior experience with tech startups or small companies
