Key Features of the M1914 Rifle Grenade
Origin: Developed by Imperial Germany in 1914 for trench warfare.
Design: Cast-iron body, painted field grey, with serrations to ensure effective fragmentation.
Explosive charge: About 2¾ ounces of explosive contained in a cardboard cylinder, secured by a shoulder piece.
Fuse system: Screw-threaded nose to accept a percussion fuse, which contained a detonator and cap ignited by a striker pellet.
Launch method: Fired from a rifle using a long rod inserted into the barrel, stabilized by a gas-check disk and base cup.
Range adjustment: A cupped range disk could be reversed or removed to alter trajectory and distance.
Effect: Upon detonation, the iron body fragmented into lethal pieces, making it effective for trench-to-trench combat across No Man’s Land.
Service use: Widely deployed during World War I; captured examples were later used by other armies.
