$115 - Rare Vintage Benin Bronze Figurine
Worth $500 on Ebay. This is a steal.
Note: This is not a historical artifact but a vintage creation made by craftsman in Nigeria about 60 yrs ago.
Background
The Benin Bronzes are a group of about 5,000 metal and ivory artworks created by the Kingdom of Benin, now in Nigeria, from the 16th century onwards. Created by the Igun Eronmwon guild for the royal court, they served as historical records of the kingdom's dynastic and social history. The collection's history is defined by the 1897 British punitive expedition, which looted the objects from Benin City to be sold in Europe, sparking a controversy over their ownership and return. Many museums in the West, are now returning these historical Benin Bronzes back to Nigeria for display in Benin City’s new Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA) in 2026. This centre, designed by Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye, will house the most comprehensive display of Benin Bronzes ever assembled. In the meantime, at least some of the bronzes from the Horniman will be transferred to the Benin City National Museum, allowing local citizens to have permanent access to them for the first time.
Many local craftsmen in Nigeria have been making Benin Bronzes for centuries, and here is a piece that is hard to find, very delicate craftsmanship, fine modeling, and of vintage years. Note the detailing of the face, very finely created. Going at a low price due to moving and having to reduce my art collection.
