Not only does this unit come equipped with the latest (as of 12 Jul 2026) Synology OS, it comes with an additional 32GB of ECC RAM and an updated 10gbe ethernet NIC.
A few disclaimers:
1. This runs on an AMD CPU, so you don't get hardware transcode. Blame AMD or something. I cannot fix that.
2. The fans aren't quiet. You're free to throw in your own Noctuas, but I didn't. Feel free to add some! I'll cheer you on for free!
3. No storage is included. This is the unit only. No, I won't give you any HDDs, sorry. They're all in my new rack mount Unraid setup.
Let's add up the value of this great product!
Do you want a 6 bay Synology right now? Too bad. Your best bet for new right now is the 5 bay 1525+, for sale at $1000 on B&H.
Do you want the added multi-gig NIC? That's an added $129.
Do you want more RAM than the stock 4GB of RAM? Well, that's about $300.
So, just to get to near-equivalent hardware, you're looking at least $1400 (before taxes and shipping). But that's for ONLY 5 bays of sweet data. With the 1621+ you get SIX bays. That's 20% more bay!
