This soil auger is used to sample soil vs. depth to depths of 6ft. Generally used in agriculture. Its an alternative to digging a trench with a backhoe.

I also used it in Napa to place watermark soil moisture sensors to depths of 4 ft. to gather information on water penetration useful in making irrigation decisions.
