Surly has a great reputation for building all-purpose steel bikes that are affordable. The 4130 chromoly frame is strong and durable. This bike is in great condition and has some interesting bits. The rear dropouts boast the cool Surly Tuggnut chain tensioner on both sides with the all important bottle opener feature. The chain guard is carbon and the bike has cool stickers to give it a bit of that infamous Surly attitude. The fork steerer has plenty of room for adjustment. This bike would make a great commuter or even a gravel bike if your route is not super hilly. The gearing is 39T (front ring)/18T (rear cog).
With a 55cm effective top tube and a 50cm seat tube (c-c), the official size from Surly is 52cm and this bike should fit most riders in the 5'4" to 5'7" range. The standover measurement is 30.5".
This bike is equipped with Shimano 105 cranks, Avid Shorty 6 cantilever brakes, Shimano 105 brake levers, Specialized carbon seatpost with Zertz dampener, Cane Creek headset, Bontrager stem, Mavic Open Pro rims with Shimano Ultegra hubs and Vittoria Randonneur Cross 700x28c tires.
This Surly is in overall Good to Very Good used condition. There are some signs of wear from normal usage (some rub marks on the driveside crank). Mechanically, the bike is tuned and ready to ride.
Product Description from the Manufacturer:
“The bicycle is a great way to get around. It’s a lot less expensive than a car and a lot less crowded than public transportation. These days, many bicycle companies forsake practicality in the name of speed, weight, or some other frivolity. Well, not us. Behold the Cross-Check: a different take on an old favorite, and a go-to for those seeking solid two-wheel, non-motorized transport.”
“It’s still the same Surly Cross-Check frame that has reliably carried people from here to there for decades, only with a spec that moves it deeper into the category of practical transportation. The Cross-Check frame is constructed of our size specific 4130 CroMoly ‘Natch tubing… One of our goals with this bike was to keep the price tag low and the usefulness high. That way, you’ll have some cash leftover just in case you want to stop for a happy hour on the way home from work.”
