These are Meerschaum pipes from either the late 1800s or early 1900s
Beautifully carved with amber roots
Pick up in Hillsborough

Probably NOT owned by Ulysses S. Grant, but interesting that he had the same taste
Besides, much less expensive
It doesn't look like the index finger has survived on any of this style & age
