A 19th century stickbox / Dowry chest from Northern Rajasthan. Jaisalmer area. It has been painted in the Rajasthani style. The painting is good quality, however applied considerably later - perhaps 1970's, the solid wood box itself being from the 1800's. The wood is kair and is fastened together with traditional iron straps.
These chests would have been used for storage and probably given as part of a dowry, as wood in that region is relatively scarce. The painting on this chest is of a really nice quality. This chest has a slide open lid, more or less a secret door to open. The chest is lacquered, over fine paintings of various lovely scenes. The overall condition is beautiful, condition being consistant with the age of the piece, with top painted panels showing some wear, the clear lacquering topcoat over the paint shows darkening consistent with age.
