Framed reproduction on Canvas (with replicated paint texture) of Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son”
The original hangs in the Prado Museum in Madrid. This reproduction on canvas was purchased in the Prado gift shop in the early 1970s. It is framed in wood and measures 9½ x 16½ on the outer border of the frame, and 8 x 5 inches on the internal canvas portion.
Please note that this rendering goes well beyond the standard Giclée printing process, which yields a high-quality print, but produces a flat image with only the texture of the underlying canvas visible.
Specialized fine art printers however, can reproduce the exact brushstrokes and textures of an original piece using advanced technology, which captures not just the color, but also the depth and topography of the brushstrokes and paint layers. The final product is a physically textured print that interacts with light in the same way as the original, creating realistic shadows and movement. I believe that is represented in this example here (please see the accompanying pictures).
Full disclosure: there appears to be a small, narrow paint splotch in the lower left corner, which is actually a very slight tear in the canvas.
This canvas reproduction was a gift, brought back from the Prado Museum decades ago. I subsequently had it framed, and have appreciated and enjoyed it ever since. Time to de-clutter now, so I’m offering it here.
