NEXT MEETING (Last Chance): MAY 28 (Corte Madera) 7:30pm at MMWD***Marin Municipal Water District is preparing to jack up rates once again, this time using outright rate and fee increases (4% a year x 4 years) coupled with a hefty new annual Property Tax assessment that will be $163.50 (5/8 “meter) to $409 (1” meter). The new fees & taxes equate to a 24% INCREASE ON THE AVERAGE BILL and doesn’t take into account the customer's water use, which unfairly burdens those who use less water. MMWD is already by far one of the richest water districts in CA. They are now raising rates again while some other water districts have decreased them. Most of California's water agencies, like Marin, have benefitted from record rainfall, increased revenue, and new corporate tax reductions. The other districts have passed along these savings to customers or at least kept rates steady. MMWD also can no longer claim drought conditions either as an excuse. The reservoirs are overflowing and we have a record 3-year snowpack. MMWD has a long list of dubious claims to justify their crusade for more fees, higher rates, and new taxes. If nobody does anything, MMWD will have their way...unless we all submit a short protest letter (sample shown below). Showing up at this next meeting will let them know we are serious. After 5/28/19 it will be too late

Attn: Board Secretary and MMWD Board of Directors:
I am writing to formally protest the newly proposed water rate increases and property tax assessments. I feel strongly that these massive new increases are not only unjustified but are grossly unfair to all rate-payers, and especially unfair for those who conserve water. The property tax assessment is particularly injurious to everyone as it is not tied to the water bill and again penalizes water-savers the most.
Please consider the severe consequences that these new proposals will have on our community and STOP these price hikes. As a proud representative of Marin County, I hope you can see as I do that these rate and tax increases are not in our best interests.
