In Othello, players take turns placing black or white discs on an 8x8 board to surround and flip their opponent's discs, aiming to have the most discs of their color at the end of the game. A move is made by placing a disc on an empty square to outflank one or more of the opponent's discs in a straight line (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally), flipping them to the player's color. If a player cannot make a valid move, they pass their turn; the game ends when neither player can move, and the player with the most discs wins.
The game of Othello was patented and launched by Goro Hasegawa in Japan in 1971, with Tsukuda Original distributing it under license in Japan. While the game is now licensed and distributed globally by companies like Ravensburger.us and others, Hasegawa holds the original patent and rights to the modern version of the game.
