Original and complete, highly collectible,. Peugeot's top model used by its pro racing team. This is not a parts donor or daily beater, nor a rebuild, but a complete, original PX10L in exceptional condition. I have cleaned it only minimally. A few distracting small marks were spotted with matching paint, but otherwise this is how I received the bike This model was still Peugeot’s team bike in late 1973 when this example was made and before the PY10 joined the lineup. The unusually steep head tube angle on these early 70s PX10s is not the result of a crash, as someone on this forum has continually insisted—see comments below and team photo.
The “L” model (LE in the US) varied from the standard PX10E in a number of ways:
Frame: Reynolds 531 throughout. Smooth-contoured “Dubois” style lugs, painted white and lined in gold.
Rear spacing: 6 speed/126mm instead of 5-speed 120mm
Brakes: MAFAC “Competition” instead of “Racer”
Stem: Philippe forged, polished, anodized, with Peugeot sticker (original) and recessed Allen key wedge bolt
Saddle: Ideale 2002 (NOS)
Additional differences:
Derailleurs: This particular bike came with an SLJ AR615 alloy rear derailleur in place of the Delrin Criterium model.indicating that it was ordered by a racing club. As I received it, the bike exactly matched the official team bike shown in tha attached team photo.
The front derailleur, the Super Competition, was a notorious design, the plastic clamp (joint hollowed to pass the cable through) was guaranteed to crack. Its successor was the alloy and steel SLJ model installed on this bike.
Wheels: Pelissier Professional high-flange hubs (similar to Maillard Team Professional or Peugeot Trophy), Mavic Championnat du Monde tubular rims, 15g Berg spokes. Maillard skewers.
This bicycle was built in the latter part of 1973 for the 1974 model year.
Condition/completeness: Paint and decals are original and in outstanding condition, with only very small blemishes. This is about as clean a 1974 bike you’ll find that was actually ridden. Chrome is original and flawless. I have left the French dealer decal in place as part of the bike’s history
All components are original or same as original except the following:
Tires (Continental Giro tubulars), brake pads, cabling, handlebar cloth tape, and vintage Lapize toe straps.
There is a small shim in the seat tube to snug up a seatpost that is very slightly out of round—this is endemic to the steel seat posts of the era.
All bearings repacked with new balls and grease and adjustedFrame and fork were throughly checked and aligned by noted frame builder Ed Litton
The early 70s PX10s featured steep racing geometry, with a head angle around 76.5 degrees; the top tube was consequently made longer to preserve the center-front distance. This a quick-handling bike, but the moderate fork rake gives good stability. The length of the top tube will favor a taller rider or one with longer arms than normally rides a frame of this height.
This bike is ready to ride or display. Asking $1500. Priority given to local buyer (N.California). Will otherwise ship at actual cost.
