“A Simple Gesture” is a new program starting up in the North Bay. It’s as simple as it sounds; We ask households to place a bag of food on their doorstep and our volunteer drivers pick it up to deliver to a local food panty or food bank.
It may sound small, it’s actually a very big deal. Last year we collected 4.5 million pounds of food in other areas. Donors really like it because it fits into their busy lives. Everyone has some extra food to donate every now and then.
We are backed by the Redwood Credit Union, they are our main sponsor. The Redwood Empire Food Bank and the SF/Marin Food Bank also support us. In fact most of the food we collect goes to them. But if the pick up is further away, like Sebastopol, for example, the food stays in that area. We want food to stay local, its neighbors helping neighbors.
What we need are more volunteers. But we have so many activities going on during this “Holiday Food Drive” we can’t fill all the spots. So we have decided to hire 3 or 4 people. You will be paid $20-$25 per hour, AND you get the added benefit to know your work is going to do some great things!
The main role is easy, and it’s fun. You would wear one of our ASG aprons, and have one of bright green reusable bags. You would work in front of a retail store, like a Safeway. As shoppers approach you simply say “We are having a food drive, we need your help”. Those that aren’t interested, no problem. This is not a sales job, you’re just trying to find those that want to help.
We’ve been doing a lot of these, and we already know about 1 out of 8 shoppers will want to know more. And about 75% of those will register. It only takes about 90 seconds to register. They will thank you! So many people want to do good things, they just don’t have the time. You’ve just given them a simple way to be involved.
