Made in the late 1960’s, the Model C is the predecessor to its more well known successor, the Model D6. The Model C’s most famous player is Stevie Wonder, and is easily identifiable by its orange Tolex covering. The switchgear is simpler than a D6, and consists only of two tone tabs - AB and CD, and a volume knob. It is noticeably more aggressive sounding than a D6, but does not have the D6’s string muting feature.
I bought this example, S/N 640849, in 2016. I decided not to re-string it because I had just finished a full restoration on another Model C and I liked the brighter sound of the older strings that this one had. I did have its circuit board professionally repaired with a Vintage Vibe kit (the parts that were removed are included), and converted to a three prong AC cord outlet. I installed a set of Vintage Vibe strikers, and purchased the reproduction front black metal panel that is presently installed. Other than one gig that I took it on, it has lived a quiet life in my smoke-free home studio.
Fully tuned and tested, and it sounds great. The images clearly show that it has a history of being moved about, with noticeable wear to its covering in each corner, and two of its leg cups are missing their internal bolt, which prevents two of its legs from being screwed in. Its lid will not latch correctly. Included are its 4 legs, leg bag, and top lid. It weighs 73 pounds with its lid and legs.
I have used it sparingly in my smoke-free home studio. Functionally excellent, with quiet linear slider controls, and smooth, even keyboard action. $4500
