About Protofab
Protofab is a precision aerospace manufacturer located in Petaluma, California. We specialize in producing some of the world's most demanding precision-machined components for commercial space, satellite, semiconductor, medical, defense, and advanced technology companies.
Our work supports customers who are building the next generation of space exploration, communications, scientific instruments, and advanced manufacturing systems. Every part we produce contributes to technologies that expand human capability, from enabling scientific discovery to helping build the infrastructure that will one day support permanent human presence on the Moon and Mars.
We continue to invest in world-class manufacturing technology including Kern, Hermle, Makino, Haas, Zeiss metrology, automation, and AI-enabled manufacturing systems. Our vision is to build one of the premier precision machining organizations in the United States.
If you're passionate about solving difficult manufacturing problems, working with exceptional people, and helping shape the future of American manufacturing, we'd like to meet you.
About the Role
This position is for someone who enjoys solving difficult manufacturing problems, not simply writing toolpaths. You'll work closely with engineering and production to develop robust, repeatable machining processes that transform complex designs into world-class precision components.
We are looking for a skilled Senior CNC Programmer to join our team and help develop world-class multi-axis machining processes. In this role, you'll take ownership of complex components from 3D CAD models through first article approval and repeatable production.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished CNC programmer and setup machinist with extensive experience developing and proving out complex multi-axis machining processes. They are comfortable taking parts from CAD model to production on high-end equipment such as Hermle, Makino, and Haas machining centers. Mastercam experience is preferred, but we welcome candidates with advanced Fusion 360 or other professional CAM software experience. For the right individual with exceptional machining ability and process development skills, we are willing to provide Mastercam training.
Key Responsibilities
• Programming: Create, edit, and optimize complex multi-axis CNC programs using modern CAM software, primarily Mastercam, for precision aerospace and advanced technology components.
• Setup & Operation: Perform full setups on 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC mills and turning centers including Kern, Hermle, Makino, Haas, and other advanced machining centers.
• Production Ready: Perform first-article prove-outs, dry runs, and single-block verification.
• Process Development: Develop machining strategies, workholding concepts, tooling selections, and manufacturing processes that maximize quality, repeatability, and productivity.
• Process Optimization: Continuously improve cycle times, tool life, and machining strategies while maintaining strict quality standards.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnose G-code errors, tooling wear, and machine alarms on Fanuc, Heidenhain, or Haas controls.
Required Qualifications & Skills
• Proven experience programming and proving out complex 3, 4, and 5-axis precision components in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
• Experience machining aerospace, semiconductor, medical, or similarly high-tolerance components preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Mastercam. Strong Fusion 360 or comparable CAM experience welcomed.
• Direct experience setting up and operating Haas, Makino, Hermle, or similar high-end CNC equipment.
• Deep understanding of G-code, M-code, GD&T;, blueprint reading, cutting tools, feeds and speeds, and advanced workholding.
What We Offer
• Top-tier compensation based on experience.
• Health and dental insurance.
• 401(k) with company matching.
• Generous paid time off and holidays.
• Professional growth through advanced technology, challenging work, and continuous learning in a clean, climate-controlled facility.
