My survey is done BEFORE you decide to buy.
I INSPECT SAILBOATS FOR YOU PRIOR TO YOU MAKING ANY COMMITMENT.
My fee is by the hour and is very reasonable, considering my advice can save you making a bad decision. I can save you thousands of dollars pointing out deficiencies you may not have noticed. I can counsel you; Is this the right boat for what you want a boat for? My fee for the first hour is $175, $100/per hour after that, $50 driving time. Terms are cash at the end of the day.
I offer you my services as a consultant for selecting the right boat for you, in the right condition, for the right price. We can work by phone, by email, and by checking out sailboats you like. I educate you on the design, the overall condition, and the expensive repairs that will likely be needed.
The seller wants you to buy the boat. The yacht broker wants you to buy the boat; this is how he earns a commission. I will conduct a pre-purchase survey for you. I am the only one in the industry who will tell you NOT to buy the boat. I can also help you proceed with the necessary steps to buy the boat.
A marine surveyor is someone you hire, after you have agreed to buy a boat, to inspect the sea worthiness of the boat. A surveyor will never tell you this is a bad deal, don't buy this boat.
Buying a sailboat is NOT like buying a car. All cars are designed the same, they stop and go, turn right and left, go on the freeway, etc. Not so with sailboats! Some are designed for lakes, some for protected waters, some for SF Bay and our very windy conditions, and some are designed for offshore ocean sailing. There are good and not so good new sailboats. And there are good and not so good years for used boats, designs, yacht designers, brands, and builders.
There is lots to know before you plunk down your money! I must warn you about falling in love with a sailboat, because buying a boat is usually about a dream you have. My consulting is about bringing your dream into reality, without costly mistakes. And please, do not allow the seller to educate you about his boat, the market, and how good a deal he is offering you. I do not know how many times I have heard, "He was such a nice guy".

Sailing instruction on your boat
There is a big difference between professional instruction and what you may have learned from your friend. Learn how to properly reef so you can confidently sail our strong summer winds.
20 years teaching sailing professionally, US Sailing Certified Instructor. $75/ hour on your boat; $25/hour each additional student. $300 minimum + $50 driving time. Terms are cash at the end of the day.
Have you noticed when our strong winds are up, mostly only the racers are out? And on days with very light wind there are lots of sailboats on the water? I think this is because many bay sailors do not know how to properly reef down their sails, they have frightened themselves and their family crews who decide sailing is not for them. I know many stories like this. I can teach you to gain confidence and prove to your family how safe sailing can be, even in very strong winds. I can also assist you in properly rigging your boat.
