This is a vintage FRANCISCAN Earthenware Pedestal Serving Dish in Desert Rose Pattern, probably the most popular dinnerware pattern in the 1940’s and 1950’s. It is about 8"-dia. x 4” H, with a shallow concave bowl; it’s in virtually new condition…it has no cracks, chips, scuffs, or crazing. It’s evidently FRANCISCAN from its iconic ‘rose’ pattern but it is only back-stamped on the base with a numeric ‘14.’ Between 1934 and 1984, the ‘golden period’ of FRANCISCAN production, it was made by the huge Gladding, McBean and Co. plant in California. (After 1984 its production was moved to England, Portugal, and later in China.) The colorful and playful Desert Rose pattern was a American success story, distinctly Western with its wild, rugged ‘bramble’ appearance that paid no regard to European floral tradition. Each individual piece was hand-crafted using molds, firing, hand painting and glazing. It’s available for local pick-up in San Rafael, cash, Venmo, or PayPal.
