Locally made biochar for sale. $3 per gallon, either as pure biochar or in an 80/20 compost/biochar blend (same price).
At the hardware store (Friedman's in Sonoma), they sell 1/2 gallon bags of biochar made on the other side of the country (Georgia) for $13. Get the local stuff from me for 1/8th the price!
Larger quantities also available ($300 per cubic yard).
I can deliver up to 3 yards of biochar to you for $3 per mile from downtown Sonoma.
1 gallon of biochar is enough to mix with: 1/2 to 1 cubic feet of compost, 1 to 2 cubic feet of potting soil, or 2 to 8 square feet of garden space, depending on how heavily you want to use it.
Use as a soil amendment to improve the water infiltration and water holding capacity in your garden, improving water-use efficiency while also serving as habitat for the microbes and mycorrhizal fungi that turn dirt into living soil.
Use in your compost to improve aeration, accelerating the composting time, while simultaneously "charging" the biochar with nutrients and biology.
Add it to your chicken coop or livestock bedding to reduce odor, then add the charged biochar and bedding material to your compost to supercharge it.
Biochar is long lasting once added to the soil (the carbon in biochar remains in the soil for 100s to 1000s of years).
For best results in your garden, biochar should spend some time charging before using with plants. Otherwise, it can cause a temporary drain on soil nutrients as it fills its many open pores. Charging can be as simple as mixing the raw biochar into your garden a month before you start planting, or as complex as cycling the biochar from chicken coop to compost heap to garden soil.
If you prefer your biochar pre-charged with nutrients and ready for use with plants, we sell an 80/20 compost/biochar blend that we make with organic compost from Sonoma Materials.
All our biochar is high-temperature (more than 600°C) wood-biochar made with flame-cap kilns. The following varieties of biochar are currently available:
- Grapevine (diverted from burn piles in Sonoma - 5 cu-yds available)
- Oak woodland blend (from twigs and branches of trees cleared for defensible space - 2.5 cu-yds available)
- 80/20 Compost/Biochar blend (our biochar blended @ 20% into organic compost from Sonoma Materials - made to order in up to 1 cu-yd batches)
All our biochar is lab verified to be high carbon-content (average 82%) and long-lasting (average molar ratio H/Corg of 0.3). Lab results available on request.
