A ‘diamond in the rough,’ this Mid-century Kuehne (Keen-ee) Manufacturing Dining Chair is a rare glimpse into the décor of 75-years past. Kuehne began furniture in 1932 in Mattoon, IL. By the mid-1950s they had made their reputation primarily on chrome dinette sets, the ‘Kuehne Khrome’ line, becoming the nation's largest chrome dinette manufacturer at the time. This chair likely dates from that era. At its inception, the chair had a chrome frame, upholstered seat and an open back with brass-finished wrought iron scrollwork. The paperboard dust cover on the underside of the seat is stamped with Kuehne’s motto ‘A Genuine Kuehne Product The Finest.’ However, sometime in the interim, someone hand-painted the frame black, and likely reupholstered the seat in metallic green vinyl with piping, as seen in these photos. Some of the black paint is peeling away, revealing the underlying tubular chrome frame. The brass finish on the front of the scrollwork has worn off to base metal while on the backside the finish still is intact. While this was intended to be a personal restoration project, time has passed and plans have changed. The chair now is offered up to another intrepid DIY-er willing to take on the restoration project. (In 1956 Kuehne Manufacturing lost a lawsuit for copying a rival company’s design. Unable to pay related fees and awarded judgement, the company liquidated its assets and closed its doors in 1965.) As one of the last of its kind, this chair is available for local pick-up in San Rafael, cash, Venmo, or PayPal.
