Memories:
*****The Story Of My Oldsmobiles:*****
If ever, cars could tell stories, the Oldsmobiles in my life would have volumes to recount. My journey with these classic vehicles is woven IN chrome, leather, gasoline, and the intangible threads of memory that never quite loosen their grip. To own an Oldsmobile is to embrace a piece of Americana. A time when windshields were wide, radios crackled with distance stations and EVERY day promised a new adventure.
My very first was a 1965 Cutlass Supreme. It’s paint was beautiful shade of gold, I think it was Sierra Gold. Each time the engine roared to life, it captured every one of my senses, engaging me in a heightened sense of reality. Remembering most importantly …. to “Find joy IN the journey, rather than the destination.”
As my enthusiasm grew, so did my ambition. I began to restore a 1956 Oldsmobile Starfire. This restoration was a labor of love. A slow process of hunting down parts, consulting manuals and learning from fellow Oldsmobile enthusiasts. Through restoration, I became part of a larger community of Oldsmobile owners. We gathered at shows and rallies, “swapping” stories, helpful tips and even some hard to find parts were traded. My Starfire became a conversation starter. A rolling testament to the brand’s legacy and my own stubborn devotion. THAT car, has been a “member of the family and good friend” for 34 magical years and counting.
Around 2004, I got the idea of finding … THE CAR … that represented my birth year. After three years of searching, I finally located a 1947 Series 68 convertible. It’s location was a mere 3,000 miles away in Long Island, New York. I asked a good friend to join me on THAT cross-country quest …. just to SEE a car. WOW !!!! There “she” was … decked out in that beautiful,
eye catching … CASPIAN BLUE color, with a tan top and burgundy interior. WHAT a beauty !! Being on the coast, the car was dusted in sea salt. This did not detour me in the slightest, for I could see the paint was good, except for a small ding on the driver side, front fender. I would soon discover that was not the only problem. While test driving the car … I’d traveled thousands of miles to see … “she” started smoking so badly I couldn’t even see the cars behind me. It was very embarrassing. So, I made the decision to go home without “Sweet Blue.” After 2 weeks of non-stop thinking about THAT car, I decided “she” needed to be rescued and I was JUST the guy to do it !! A deal was made and “Blue” was in my garage a month later.
