I bought the car from original owner, have all maintenance records and paperwork since date of purchase. Both of us were in mid 50's when we bought it and did not have kids using the car. We both have large garages to store the car and a budget to keep it in perfect shape. It would be reasonable to say most components of these cars are built with a 70 to 100k usable life span. All of these components have been replaced such as Engine Vanos (valving system ($7,200in) Transmission rebuild ($2,000) Complete suspension (RTABs Bushings, Shocks, control arms, sway bar end links, etc) ($4,000), Steering, Brakes,TPS, (4)O2 sensors, MAF, etc. all done in last 20K mile giving you 5 to 10 years without anticipated repair of major components. 7,500 maintence just completed and 100K service completed. He and I averaged about 4,00 miles per year. has been stored in the garage all of its life, never abused.
Youir expectation should be that you'll find an excellent example of these M3 E46 model cars that runs better than when it was new. Paint, suspension, engine performance, steering, brakes is exactly like the day it was sold, A few minor dings, in the body, the tires could be balance again for general purposes, I just did the alignment (3 time in 20K miles because I am picky-it does not need to be done this often).

If you don't know much about these cars, make sure the one you buy has attended to maintenance and owner has properly repaired the Vanos System (reciept proof $7,200 at dealership), SMG II tranny $2,000 at dealership and all other maintenance is a must if you don't want incredible repair bills. There are cheap ways to mask impending valving failure so be cautious.
88,752 miles
2nd owner
Garage kept
All hardware, body and paint is original with exception of the pain on front right fender.
Never power boosted
CSL software upgrade for shift points installed.
New BMW competition rims at 75K for $1600 (not Chinese junk but factory wheels)
New Dynavin N6 with the State of the Art features ($1,000), google it, very impressive, camera system option was installed, several plug ins for various electronics hidden below if needed and other options iBUS solution integration, updated into car.
Two original keys
This is my fun car, I have two of them plus transportation car plus ATV, Boat and RV. I never want this car to disappoint so I have kept spare parts and supplies on hand and changed them out early always early. (Money has not been a factor in keeping this car up and running properly
It comes with large inventory of maintenance and wear items, I have just installed the 100,000 mile sensors and parts not because they were worn but because I had them in inventory and did this for the new owner. Parts include Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), O2 sensors (4 of them before and after Catalytic converters)(these parts changed July 2017 and have some spare MAFs and O2 sensors), TPS already done, new coils. The suspension was completely addressed front and back with new OEM RTABs, and bushings throughout active double wishbone front L & R. I have spares that come with the car for immobile items like engine mounts support bushings-I have not heard of these wearing out but just in case. High pressure steering and steering components replaced and have spares. Original alternator in use and have spare with belts if needed. I'll either change the windshield wipers and alternator prior to sale or give to new owner, your choice. Air filters and Oil come with car plus much more.

I just had the car in the dealership for a inspection including sub frame, emission test and any performance items. 3 items came up:
1 worn trailing arm linkage grommet
2 very minor leak of oil from sensor
3 hose material on power steering appear aged only in location of sWedge fitting.
All repaired

I still have original radio and wheels if you prefer those.
