Current owner purchased the car in Sept. 1987 with 41,223 miles. The mileage now is 41,569. As purchased, the body was in good condition, no signs of collision or damage, the doors fit well, body gaps good, glass good, the passenger and driver doors had good bushings with no slop or droop. The paint was original & showing its age; crazing & faded in places. Interior was original and fairly good considering its age. The car drove well, all mechanicals working as they should. All these conditions appear to ratify the low mileage on the odometer.
After about a year of ownership and enjoying the car, a full body off / rotisserie restoration was begun. The installed short block was a 402 from the mid 70's, but the heads, intake, exhaust & the rest of the engine were mostly original. The Carb was a replacement Holley 4160. A hard to find casting #351 short block was sourced with a proper date code; It passed magneflux testing and was fitted with 10.0 forged pistons (.060 over), steel forged crankshaft and the best ARP rod bolts available at the time. Engine machine work included align honing, torque plate cylinder honing and rotating assembly balancing. The original correctly numbered and dated oval port heads were rebuilt as necessary. Camshaft is a Crane Blueprint hydraulic copy of the correct GM Camshaft.
The car was disassembled down to the bare body. Chassis was disassembled to the bare frame. The complete chassis was rebuilt using many original parts given the low mileage and an eye towards originality. Chassis was finish painted using PPG DP epoxy. All painting and assembly line markings of the chassis was in accordance to what NCRS considered correct at the time (1989- 1990). No rust issues.
The Body was stripped to the bare black fiberglass. A few small fiberglass repairs were made and the body was re-sprayed with Ecklers gel coat, block sanded to 600 grit sandpaper then sprayed with real R&M lacquer. About 6-8 coats of clear lacquer was then put down. Paint was then cut and rubbed into what is considered to be a nice show car finish (over restored). Chrome and stainless trim is mostly original, original bumpers were re-chromed.
Interior is a mix of old and new. Original headrest cleaned up very nice as did the original dash pads. The new interior parts were mainly sourced from Al Noch. Glass is mostly original, the windshield is a replacement. AM/FM radio was rebuilt / restored by a classic radio specialist.
The engine was restored to 400 hp Tri-powered specifications using a correct 67 oval port intake manifold and associated parts. The block was re-stamped as if it were an original numbers matching 400 hp car. Full disclosure: this car is an original 390 hp car and comes with the original intake manifold and parts to restore it as such. Original VIN coded transmission was in good shape as was the 3:36 posi rear axle and were installed after being treated to a cosmetic restoration. Brakes are stainless steel sleeved and recently rebuilt within the past couple of years. Steel wheel rims are the correct date and code matched to the car. The original beauty rings & hub caps are present, including the spare. Tires are modern and were recently refreshed for safety reasons during test drives and car show forays. Pictures show car when previously fitted with knock off wheels.
The car gets started regularly & driven a little to keep things working. Car has clean California title in owner's name. Car is kept in a garage under a cover. The car is now available for purchase because at a certain point in life different interests and priorities take over.
Any questions just ask. More pics are available.
