Due to a divorce this 1975 Amel Meltem is for sale.
This is an unfinished project boat based in Leros, Greece.
I have owned this sailboat since 2021.
We suffered two losses:
1. Coming out of the boatyard in France the rubber hose cooling the engine came out (was not double clamped properly) and resulted in a flooding of the engine room that nearly sunk the boat (all electrical, plumbing, engine, generator, watermaker were badly damaged and corroded).
2. During the winter 2024/2025 the mechanics in charge of the maintenance at the Greek marina created two problems:
They stepped on a diesel hose and created a leak. I found the boat six months later flooded with diesel. Close to 150 gallons filled every space under the floor, destroying, pumps, electrical wires and plumbing hoses
The same crew disconnected the main battery switch while neglecting to disconnect the Solar panels breakers. This resulted in a 50V DC current that fried all pumps (bilge and house water) and fans.
A survey is available after the first 2021 loss. Most items have been repaired but not all.
It is too expensive to get a boatyard to complete all repairs. You would not get your money back. This project boat can become a great boat if you have strong technical skills.
The Yanmar engine has close to 3,000 hours, consumes a fair amount of oil but is OK
The Onan diesel generator is OK
The watermaker is 20 year old and requires constant maintenance
The freezer unit has been dismantled and needs to be reinstalled
The electrical system is OK in general but in some areas the 50 year wires behind the plywood cabinets need to be replaced. This is major work
The main diesel tank is contaminated with bacteria and is plugged. Diesel filters are plugged. The boatyard refuse to work on a fixed bid to make the boat operational. They floated a $10-15K price tag to remove all filters, cut two ports in the thick stainless steel tank and clean the gunk manually, then built diesel-tight hatches in that tank.
The boat is not able to go anywhere unless the diesel tank is cleaned.
Mast and standing rigging are beyond 10 year old and have been excluded by the insurance company
Cosmetic: the hull needs to be painted (see photos of the starboard side). The deck needs to be repainted and major water damage in the starboard quarter berth requires new plywood.
Leaks: about 80% of the leaks have been dealt with but there are several spots difficult to reach. The deck hatches are not 100% water proof.
I have invested 1,000/1,500 hours every year restoring the boat. I am a highly skilled engineer.
My estimate to complete the boat:
2-3,000 man hours to complete
An additional $30-40K in equipment
New linens, cushions (all damaged by the diesel spill and I have not been able to get the diesel smell out)
New flares and basic safety equipment to comply with US regulations
The boat has complex systems:
Two alternators (on 12v dc and one 24v dc) on the engine
On 12v alternator on the generator
Most of the boat is 24v dc except 90% of the electronics are 12v dc
220v AC with 50Hz (US is 100v ac with 60Hz)
Watermaker on 24v dc and 220v ac (not currently working)
Solar panels: 1,700w
Wind generator (D400, not used as too noisy and inefficient compared to solar)
Fridge with two compressor
Freezer with machinery removed for repairs
If the above is complete you can sell the boat for $100-120K but you need to do the work yourself in order to be cost effective. Significant technical skills are mandatory.
