Heres are some great descriptions:
"The LT model (as pictured) has been refined in every way possible from tubing to geometry; it was also one of the last production year models (I think they stopped in 93). It has the unique STB tubing that gives it great strength while still being somewhat light for a touring bike. Most touring bikes feel a bit dead unloaded and stable when loaded, but to me, the 1000 excels in both and it doesn't even feel like a touring bike sometimes! It's simply a plush and elegant riding machine when you have the right components. One of the many highlights people mention about this bike is that it feels lively for its class.
I've toured on it from Calgary to Vancouver effortlessly. The bike never let me down and I could spend hours riding without really noticing the time. . It simply wants to be ridden".
"To elaborate on the proprietary STB tubing -- this stands for Splined Triple Butted. Miyata was actually a rifle manufacturer before they made bikes, so the "Splined" refers to raised ridges spiraling along the inside surface of the tubes, similar to the rifling on the inside of a rifle gun barrel (in additional to the normal variations in wall thickness that triple butting would imply). This BikeForums thread includes some pictures that demonstrate this: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/622800-what-splined-stb-miyata-triple-butted-tubing.html
In addition to general benefits to the balance of strength/weight/suppleness as normal butting might provide, Miyata claims that the spiral pattern would specifically improve torsional stiffness of the tubes, resisting the frame twisting under load.
