Pressing the button puts a request in a queue for the traffic signal controller to provide a walk indication when appropriate.
The device helps improve pedestrian safety at intersections.
Such buttons often include features for visually or hearing-impaired pedestrians, known as Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS).
