Oil crayon and airbrush portrait on handmade fiber stock, the ‘Woman w/Cat’ by an anonymous artist, in the style of Christine Rosamond, likely created in the mid-1970s, on the basis of the stamped date on its accompanying vintage plastic Burwood frame, 1976. The artwork itself is unsigned but has the general appearance of many of Rosamond’s seminal works, that of a bright-eyed young woman staring directly at the viewer. Artwork is framed in a vintage MCMLXXVI (1976) Burwood Products Co. white plastic/faux rattan frame, overall, 25” W x 31” H x 5/8” D. The artwork is 18” W x 24” H, inset into the frame w/overlay of about 1/2'”. Burwood originated c. 1930, specializing in plastic injection-molded decor made to look like wood. It ceased production in the mid-1990s. On the basis of the frame date imprint, the portrait likely dates from that same era, late Mid-century Modern. [Rosamond was a poignant figure that died in a tragic drowning accident in the Big Sur.] Her work became iconic in the Feminist movement of the 1980s. This portrait ‘Woman w/Cat’ shows the anonymous artist’s reverence for Rosamond’s art. It is available for local pick-up in San Rafael, cash, Venmo, or PayPal.
