Framed Silver Gelatin Photo 7430 ‘Playground of the Wind’ by Ray Atkeson (1907-1990) has Atkeson’s stylus-impressed signature in the lower right corner of the print image margin. Atkeson was the preeminent photographer of the Northwestern U.S. landscape beginning in the 1930s. He became especially well-known for his stunning black & white images of the ski and snow country in the Western states. Atkeson's photographs often appear alongside his peers Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and others, including Adams’s book ‘This is the American Earth’ (1960.) In 1990, the New York Times wrote that Atkeson was ‘Considered the dean of Northwest nature photography.’ This is an original silver gelatin photograph ‘Playground of the Wind’ that can be found in The Ray Atkeson Image Archive, 7430. [According to a source in The Oregon Historical Society, his wife Mira Atkeson, who often accompanied him on photography trips, may have made the photograph of him on skis in a snowy landscape, likely under his direction and hence his signature on the image.] The photograph was printed from the original negative on gelatin silver paper. The blind stamp on the front of the print was chosen to identify prints made from the original negative after his death. This image is 23-1/2” W x 19-1/2” H including print margin. It is hinge-mounted on a 2-ply backer board (not dry-mounted) with a white, beveled 4-ply overmat opening of 24-1/2” W x 21-1/2” H; the overall mat size 32-1/2” W x 29” H, all materials archival. It is overlain with glass and wood-framed, nominally 35-1/2” W x 32” H, with foamcore backer and dust-sealed w/kraft paper. It is strung with wire, ready to hang. The framed photograph is available for local pick-up in San Rafael, cash, Venmo, or PayPal.
