2 ea. Original Acrylic Paintings 8”x10” are by Haitian Artist Leon Gérélus, each signed on the lower center of the artpiece ‘L. Gérélus.’ These are indigenous folk art of Haiti ca. 1970s-1980s, acrylic on canvas over wood stretchers nominally 8” W x 10” H, mounted in contemporary Haitian carved wood frames, nominally 10” W x 12” H. These pieces are referenced on original bills of sale dated 1982 from the National Art Gallery, Petion-Ville, Haiti. They were identified on the bills as Nos. 120 and 121, as marked in pen on the back of each stretcher frame. They are similar in subject, a Haitian outdoor market, each from slightly different perspectives. Both have mounds and baskets of market goods, with people in the middle- and background. All create a rainbow of abstract colors, a tapestry of Haitian life in the late 20th century. (Gérélus’s work is cited in a thesis by Eva Pataki ‘Haitian Painting, Art and Kitsch’ published in 1986. In it she provides a list of 2,000 Haitian painters, including Leon Gérélus on Page 33, and about 200 black and white illustrations of some of those artists’ work.) Listing price is for one (1) painting, with a modest discount for purchase of the pair. One or both are available for local pick-up in San Rafael, cash, Venmo, or PayPal.
