O2 Treehouse is a Petaluma-based design-build firm specializing in custom, high-end treehouses for residential, hospitality, and commercial clients. The Role
We are looking for an experienced Controller on a contract basis to bring rigor and clarity to our financial operations. This is a hands-on role suited for someone comfortable working in a dynamic, project-based specialty contracting environment. You will work closely with ownership and operations leadership to ensure accurate job costing, clean books, and actionable financial reporting — and will serve as a key administrative partner in keeping the business running smoothly day to day.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all accounting functions including A/P, A/R, payroll coordination, and general ledger
- Maintain accurate job cost accounting across active construction projects, tracking labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead
- Prepare monthly financial statements, cash flow reports, and variance analyses
- Develop and monitor project budgets; flag margin risks and cost overruns in real time
- Manage WIP (work-in-progress) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Support annual financial review or audit preparation; liaise with external CPA as needed
- Assist with contract billing, lien waivers, and progress draw documentation
- Oversee general company administration, including business licensing, insurance certificates, vendor agreements, and compliance filings
- Manage or coordinate administrative workflows such as onboarding documentation, contractor agreements, and operational recordkeeping
- Identify and implement process improvements to financial and administrative workflows
- Administer HR functions including employee and contractor recordkeeping, benefits coordination, workers' comp, and leave tracking
Qualifications
- 5+ years of accounting or controller experience, preferably in construction, specialty contracting, or project-based businesses
- Strong proficiency in job cost accounting and WIP reporting
- Experience with QuickBooks accounting software
- Solid understanding of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
- Comfort wearing multiple hats in a small business environment, including light administrative and operational oversight
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with non-financial stakeholders
- Administer HR functions including employee and contractor recordkeeping, benefits coordination, workers' comp, and leave tracking
- CPA or CMA preferred but not required
