Custom built overland travel trailer
1,680 lb unloaded weight
11' long x 6' wide x 7.5' tall
(129" x 68" x 90")
Inspected and granted permanent trailer plates in October of 2022.
I designed and built this trailer as a (relatively) lightweight off-road adventure trailer to haul all of our family gear and provide a place to shelter.
It started off as a stoutly built utility trailer using a vehicle frame with a leaf-spring suspension. I upgraded the shocks and changed the axle to a Dexter TS7060EZ 6-lug with an electric brake from Six Roblee's that has 7,000lb capacity. I also provided a fresh wiring harness and utility box.
I wanted tires that could supplement the main tow vehicle if needed, so matched to my Montero, though this bolt pattern fits most Toyota and Chevy vehicles as well.
Wheels are a Cragar Soft 8 6x5.5 or 6x139.7 bolt pattern with 108mm center bore.
Tires are Cooper 265/75/16 - approximately 32” diameter.
Includes two full sized spares mounted to the body.
Connected to the exterior are (5) jerry cans housed in lockable mounts. Three fuel and two water cans will be included. Only one of the fuel cans has ever been used.
High grade Master locks are included for all locking points, all keyed alike.
On top is a large Yakima MegaWarrior rack with two extensions and three crossbars. Attached to this is a Roadshower, HiLift Jack Mount and a shovel and axe mount. On the other side is a 9' lockable PVC pipe to hold fishing rods or other long items.
Flanking the rack are two 8'x8' ARB Awnings. Attachable rooms will be included for these awnings with the idea that you could have two sleeping or living areas flanking the trailer once you got to camp.
At the rear is another 4'x6' ARB Awning that extends over the cooking area. The tailgate comes out and has fold down table legs for an accessory table. In the rear of the trailer is an ARB refrigerator and a fold out Clearview pantry/kitchen box. Underneath this is a 2" trailer hitch that we had attached a Yakima bicycle rack to.
A 40lb propane cylinder is sturdily connected with an off-road mount with locking cable. A 4' propane hose will be provided as well.
Underneath is a small lockable compartment for firearms or tools. It will come loaded with heavy duty rubber chocks and a bottle jack for repairs, along with a road toolkit.
In the side cabinets are another kitchen sink solution and a camping organizer along with a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
At the front are two 2x6 pressure treated boards for stabilization when you get to camp along with a set of MaxTraxx type traction devices.
I was planning an extended excursion to Baja for this past winter that never panned out. Now it is time to pass this along to someone who will really use it! The only thing not figured out is a battery solution, but there are so many options here that most folks looking will have already committed to a particular platform. I will include a couple of BlueSea boxes to customize to your needs.
