Big Ben...The way it was SUPPOSED to be. Made in 1975, a total of 2900 of these games were made. That's a pretty high number, considering the number of games made was directly related to how fun it was and how much it made in arcades. Quite honestly, this just wasn't one of those "winners" that was a ton of fun to play. Rumor has it, a few features were deleted right before production as a cost cutting measure. I've heard various stories of what was deleted and what was the original pre-production design. Being a pinball guy, I have a pretty good idea what makes a game more fun to play. More option, more variety, more things to hit to score more points, and lots of chimes and bells (it's interesting how much the "noise" adds to the play. Disconnect the bells, and the game all of a sudden becomes a lot less fun to play)...
So, what's been done to this special game? First off, I did my normal complete refurbishing (this is far more than what "other" people call, "restoring"). The playfield was completely stripped, deep cleaned, and meticulously waxed. Darn game is now faster than a Formula #1 race car :-) The flippers were completely rebuilt with new parts, including the flipper bats. The pop bumpers were rebuilt top and bottom (new skirts and bodies above the playfield, new parts under the playfield). All the posts cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, all metal parts tumbled in a vibrating tumbler (think rock polisher) and the playfield plastics polished and flattened. Of course there's all new rubbers and even a new ball...
Under the "hood"....every switch has been cleaned, polished and adjusted to factory specs. Every stepper, including the score reels have been torn down and completely rebuilt. The Chime Unit was rebuilt to ring loud and true! This game is snappy and plays fast, just like it did the day it left the factory.
As for the modifications... The last picture shows all the additions made (the second to last picture shows the new rule-set) First and foremost was adding the two spinners. This was the most important thing to add more fun & excitement to the game, and WOW did it ever work (seriously, this alone makes the game 10 times more FUN). Far more action to the game, and the chimes going crazy when you RIP THE SPINNER is quite exciting. It also included some simple changes to the rules of the game. Originally, knocking down the three drop targets three times would award you with an extra ball. NOW, knocking the targets down 3 times increases the value of the spinners from 100 points to 1000 points (you no longer get the extra ball, though it would be VERY simple to add that feature back in. The reason I wound up making this change was, the game was actually scoring too many points and I was rolling the score two or three times during a game). If you can keep hitting those drop targets, you can REALLY rack up some points.
I added 5 switches on the playfield that each score 50 points. Three switches behind the drop targets (so that once the drop target is down, you can still score points hitting where the drop target was), and two other switches to the right side of the middle playfield...
Lighting. Oddly, from the factory, there's a missing light on the playfield (left side, half way up). I added it back, along with another light on the right side. I also lit the saucer, AND all the light UNER the playfield I switched out to LEDs. ALL the light bulbs above the playfield are the original incandescent type, to eliminate the blinding glare of looking directly into an LED. The game is very bright, which dose make it even more fun to play (kind'a sucks when you can't even see where the ball is ;-) All the inserts and roll-over button are now beautifully lit, without being too overly bright.
I know I know, everyone wants to know why am I selling it if it's such a great game. The reason? I have ANOTHER one I'm fixing up the same way!!!
And as a final enticement....I'm offering a limited 90 labor day warranty. The "limited" part is, it only covers labor, and the game will need to be brought to me to be repaired...
Please note, I have 4 games for sale (click the More ads by this User). As soon as 2 are sold, the other 2 ads will be removed. aka, I need to free up the space of two games ;-) ...
Lastly, if you can SEE this ad, YES! IT'S STILL AVAILABLE! If you send a message asking if it's still available, I probably wont respond.....because, obviously, you can still see this ad ;-) The map is quite accurate, just let me know when you'd like to come by and give it a play! Super easy loading into your vehicle and if you don't have a way to transport it, I can "help" deliver it in my truck after you've come and looked at it and it's been purchased (n/c for up to 1/2 hour away)...
