About the house: It’s a beautiful old house, renovated in 2014. Lots of wood everywhere if you’re into that, double-paned windows, washing machine and dryer, and more. It’s in a great location: a block from Shattuck, so you get all the convenience and very little of the noise. You can walk to downtown Berkeley in about 10 minutes, and, maybe more importantly, you can walk to Cheese Board in under 5 minutes.
About the room: It’s a 14 x 13 room with a 4 x 3 closet on the second floor (see pics 2 and 3). It has south- and west-facing windows and gets great light.
The room is available now (but we're flexible about the move-in date) and the rent is $1202.
(If you're interested in living here but aren't sure if you can afford the rent, let us know! We have some flexibility to offer lower rent for folks if necessary.)
About the housemates: There are currently five humans — four adults, one teenager — and a cat.
- Ben (he/him) is a software developer and musician. He enjoys playing Irish traditional music with others, dabbling in Jazz piano, hiking, juggling, cooking and spending quiet time with the cat.
- Bryn (they/them) works at an after school program with a bunch of tiny, sweet, feral children. They love crafting (especially knitting and sewing), giggling, getting dirty, smelling plants, eating tasty food, and being a gremlin in the woods on Shabbes afternoons.
- David (he/him) runs an extracurricular math enrichment program, generally doing his darndest to help kids have fun doing math. He likes reading, talking, listening, and learning.
- Zia (she/they) is a grad student at Sofia University to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. She enjoys conversations, learning, laughing, playing traditional European music, playing cooperative games, crafting, and reading. These days she is obsessed with crocheting and listening to audiobooks, ideally at the same time.
- Lysandra (she/her) is a 14 year old. She enjoys reading, languages, flags, geography, city planning, crafting, and constructing elaborate imaginary languages.
- Rosie is a Siberian sort of rescue cat who survived the streets of Oakland for her first 4 months. Now she likes to lie around and beg for bits of apple.
Many of us are veteran co-opers, and the house has a kind of low-key, semi-formal co-op vibe: communal food, frequent house dinners, occasional game nights / craft nights / other joint projects, general sociability. For the most part, we’re early to bed, early to rise folks. We try to keep things cleanish (including monthly cleaning parties), but we’re not obsessive about it. We don’t always agree about everything, but we value each other’s perspectives and try to respect and learn from each other.
About you: You’re friendly, easy-going, considerate, and queer or queer-friendly; you’re into chatting / cooking / playing games / making art / etc. with your housemates; you ideally have some prior co-op experience; you have a sense of humor about the world in general and yourself in particular.
Covid: We’re not hyper-cautious about Covid at this point, but we do generally make an effort to keep each other healthy and safe. For Covid, flu, colds, etc., we communicate with each other in the event of any possible infection, and when folks are sick, they typically isolate in their room / mask in common spaces until they’re no longer contagious.
Other details: Rent includes water and garbage / recycling, but not gas / electricity / internet; we split those equally. (They typically come to between $30 and $70 per month.) There is communal food, whose costs are shared equally (typically between $300-$400 per month, since we eat lots of meals at the house). There is a $1000 security deposit due upon move-in.
