I've been collecting vintage and modern guitar speakers for bit now and it's time to thin the heard. Especially since I need to convince my special lady friend that I can, in fact, afford a new acoustic. All speakers were tested for functionality (and passed), were stored in a dry, stable, non-smoking environment, and were not gigged. These are well cared-for and any flaws/repairs will be noted in the description and in the pics.
MODERN SPEAKERS.
WGS (Warehouse Guitar Speakers) Reaper 12.
$70
Like New; 12", 50w 8 ohm, ceramic
Meant to be a drop in for the G12H30, this is a very nice speaker.
Celestion G12H30.
$80
Very Good; 12", 30w, 8ohm, ceramic
Classic all-rounder. Serial number indicates that this was made in July 2011.
Celestion Sidewinder S12-150.
$120
Very Good; 12", 150w, 8 ohm, ceramic.
Very interesting, somewhat obscure speaker that was an early take by Celestion on a higher-wattage driver. Pretty even sounding, like an EV, and without any harshness that I could hear. Some love them, some hate them; they are like cilantro--no middle ground.
Eminence Big Ben. $100
Like New; 15", 225w, 8 ohm, ceramic.
This speaker KICKS ASS, if you have 1x15. It came in a 5e3 clone I bought where I switched it out with an original Jensen P15NX. I actually preferred the Big Ben over the Jensen, but the guy who bought the clone wanted the vintage 15. Seriously, though, this speaker is just amazing. Full, rich, sparkle, depth. All the words. You should buy it...if you have a 1x15
VINTAGE SPEAKERS. This is what you're here for, I know.
Electro-Voice.
EVM 12L Series II, SLM Electronics version. $200
Good Condition; 12", 200w, 4 ohm, ceramic.
Date code indicates this was made in the 33rd week of 1991; 30+ years is vintage at this point right? This speaker has more wear and tear than the others. The basket has a lot of scuffs and the sticker has scratches but the cone is immaculate. Works great.
EVM 12S. $250.
Excellent; 12", 200w, 8 ohm, ceramic.
Rarer 12L variant, "S" denotes shallow basket. Pair with a 12L for a full range sound. Great driver.
EV SRO/12. $400
Excellent; 12", 75w, 8 ohm, AlNiCo.
Yup, this is the Coffee Can Magnet, first run EV SRO. Beastly in terms of weight, but what a great sound. Speaker has been reconed professionally by the then-best in the business: Orange County Speakers. They were THE go-to company for EV recones and their attention to detail is clear. Some scuffs and scratches on the basket, but the cone is perfect.
ALTEC.
Altec 417 Type. $200
Good; 12" 75w, 8 ohm, AlNiCo
This is a non-lettered variant of this speaker type--they normally have a "B" or "C" or similar after the numeric designation. I'm selling two of these, this one is in "good condition" because it has a small dent in the dust cover and had a small cone tear professionally repaired. I consider this kind of a good thing because the cone is ORIGINAL--glad the previous owner didn't opt for recone. I tested this guy at gig volumes in my garage and I couldn't hear any buzz, flub, or distortion. Great speaker, great price.
Altec 417B Dia-Cone. $200
Excellent; 12", 75w, 8 ohm, AlNiCo
Pretty much identical to the above speaker but this one has a "Dia-cone" which is a sought-after variant of these speakers. A dia-cone is apparently a variation on a wizzer cone that prevents some of the dampening of high-frequencies. This one also has a small professionally-patched tear. Cone is original.
