Antique Japanese butsudans date back hundreds of years and were used in family homes as a place of worship to honor ancestors and gods with offerings. Devout family members gathered daily before the butsudan to pray, recite scriptures, and commune with the spiritual figures enshrined within the altar. An image of the Buddha, memorial tablets of ancestors, and important family documents were often stored in the cabinet. Candles and incense were frequently lit and placed in the cabinet, along with fruits, flowers, fragrant herbs, and tea to bring peace and well-being to the family.
In today’s modern home, the antique butsudan offered here can set a soulful tone and add a touch of intrigue in your residence. This beautiful work of art features an ebony cabinet with distressed black lacquer and brass hardware, which boasts a beautiful patina showcasing its good age.
