About Miller Landscape Architecture
MLA is dedicated to transforming challenging residential hillside landscapes into regenerative, well lived-in spaces. With decades of combined experience in landscape construction as well as design, we do what we love – we craft site- and people-specific ideas and help translate the details into real, built places. To do this, we begin each project thinking like cultivators, stewards, and builders. Every project we take on reflects our guiding mission:
We design for life.
Your life. Your place. Our climate.
Why This Role Is Different
This isn't a cog-in-the-machine design job. You'll be one of four people who make up MLA — which means your voice matters, your fingerprints will be on nearly every project from first site visit to the final walk-through, and your input shapes not just designs but how we work together effectively. There's no siloed “drafting team” here; you'll move across the full arc of a project, and you'll help shape decisions about our process, our tools, and our direction as a firm.
Because we're a small design studio, fit matters as much as skill. We're looking for someone who shows up with real drive, genuinely enjoys close collaboration, and is as invested in helping teammates grow as in doing great work themselves. If that sounds like you, here's what we're looking for:
The Role
We're looking for an experienced Landscape Architectural Designer to join our team. This individual will be ready to work on all aspects of landscape design, construction documentation, project management and coordination with consultants and contractors. This position requires excellent communication and relationship-building skills, attention to detail, and a gift for creative problem-solving. Our work is both site-based and remote, and thrives with creative collaboration.
What You'll Do
Relationships
• Foster strong relationships with clients, municipalities, consultants, and contractors
Site Analysis
• Conduct site analyses and prepare accurate existing conditions plans and models
Conceptual Design
• Develop conceptual design plans from quick sketches to thoughtful, well-developed concepts that meet our clients’ goals and MLA’s values
• Create visual presentations of curated materials and plant palettes
• Prepare preliminary cost estimates
Construction Documentation
• Produce comprehensive, detailed, and accurate construction documents and specifications
Project Coordination / Field Engagement
• Participate in site visits, documentation, meeting notes and progress tracking across all phases of design and construction
Project Evaluation
• Participate in project evaluation and continuous MLA learning and outcomes improvement
What You Bring
Education & Experience
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture or a closely related field
• 5–7+ years of professional experience in residential landscape architecture
• Demonstrated commitment to regenerative design principles
• Proven expertise designing with California native plants and ecologically supportive plant palettes
• Strong background in site layout, grading, construction, planting, and irrigation design
• Proficiency with construction costs and project estimating
Technical Skills
• Vectorworks Landmark — proficient in a 2D/3D design workflow (required)
• Microsoft Office — proficient (required)
• Monograph or similar project management platforms — a plus
• SketchUp — a plus
• Adobe Creative Suite — a plus
• Background in building construction or residential remodeling — a plus
Who You Are
• A strong communicator who builds trust easily — with clients, contractors, consultants, and teammates alike
• Detail-oriented, with an organized approach to both design and documentation
• A creative problem-solver energized by challenging sites and unconventional solutions
• Driven by a genuine work ethic — you follow through, own your projects, and don't need to be reminded
• Curious and eager to keep learning, whether it's a new planting palette, a construction technique, or a better way to run a project
• Generous with your knowledge — you look for chances to help teammates grow, not just get your own work done
• Comfortable juggling multiple projects and deadlines without losing quality
• In possession of a sense of humor. Seriously. It's in the job requirements.
The Work Environment
This is a hybrid role: independent work from a home office, regular site visits to residential projects, nurseries, and suppliers, and occasional in-person time with the team. Local travel is required.
Because we're a team of three, how we work together matters as much as what we produce. We look out for each other, share what we know, and expect the same drive and follow-through we bring ourselves. In return, you'll get flexibility, a genuine say in how we operate, and a workplace built around sustainable, healthy work/life integration.
Compensation & Benefits
After a 90-day introductory period, MLA offers:
• Annual salary: $85,000 – $110,000, commensurate with experience
• Flexible work schedules
• Hybrid remote / field work arrangement
• Paid Time Off (PTO) - holiday and vacation time
• Contributions toward health care
• Retirement plan with employer contributions
