This position is part of the Job Training and Placement Program (JTPP) team. The JTPP, specifically, prepares participants for a wide range of administrative careers by combining computer training with life skills, paid experience, support services, career counseling, and long-term alumni follow-up.
The Computer Skills Instructor will direct instruction to a class of up to 20 trainees learning Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and other software in preparation for employment in office administrative positions. We use the Illustrated Microsoft Office 365 and Word/Excel 2016 texts and the GMetrix test preparation software to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist certifications.
Specifically, the position will be responsible for:
• Instructing trainees, assigning homework, modifying curriculum, and administering assessments with the goal of trainees achieving competence in computer skills;
• Tracking, managing, and evaluating trainee performance including scheduling trainee tutoring as necessary;
• Keeping training documentation up to date and usable by other parties;
• Keeping accurate records of student assignments, scores, and attendance;
• Entering regular student progress notes into our customized Salesforce database;
• Participating in program recruitment, intake, interviews, and selection of program participants;
• Mentoring and training program participants during their internship; and
• Working as part of the JTPP team to best meet the needs of our participants.
This position also serves as an Accidental Techy assuming some technology infrastructure responsibilities including setting up new user accounts and new computers, installing software updates, trouble-shooting, and staff software training.
Necessary Competencies (should have these or demonstrate the ability to develop them):
•Technology: Proficient in Microsoft Office and must be able to troubleshoot problems encountered by both the students and by other staff. Solid understanding of relational databases; experience with both data entry and data quality checking, including the ability to develop curriculum for and/or teach these skills. Ability to learn new applications without instruction;
•Relationship building: Ability to establish strong relationships with demographically diverse clients;
•Communication/Ability to hold a room: Clear verbal communication skills to facilitate software training. Can hold the room and keep people on the edge of their seats whether through energy, focus/brilliance, personal connection, authenticity, own stories, and/or wisdom;
•Sharp Processing: Quick critical thinking, understands the nuance of questions, able to untangle messes to get to the fundamental questions and understanding;
•Adaptability/Flexibility: Ability to adjust priorities and procedures depending on organizational needs and goals; and
•Problem-Solving: Ability to approach challenges creatively, team with other staff to develop solutions, and flexibly change tactics as needed.
